Krems

The twin city of Krems-Stein is located at the entrance of the UNESCO Word heritage “Wachau Valley” and the earliest settlements in this region root back to the stone age as the famous “Venus of Willendorf” was discovered nearby. The wine, which is a dominant factor in Krems economy was brought by the Romans as they erected the “Limes” on the south side of the Danube river.

Altstadt

In the middle ages Krems and Stein developed to a river harbour and was one of the main residences of the Babenberg family who started to cultivate the land, found various monasteries and create the infrastructure for the region, which today is known as Austria. In Dürnstein, which is a close vicinity of Krems, Richard Lionheart was kept hostage by Emporer Frederic and the Duke of Austria, which you can see during our social events.

Dürnstein

Krems-Stein themselves kept their historic cores, with a large number of sights and churches. But Krems hosts also a range of museums and art galleries as well as five Universities.

Passauerhof

Krems is also Austria’s Wine capital and renowned for the “Grüner Veltliner” which is among the best white wines of the world. Before harvesting wine, there is the apricot season, and the “Wachauer Marille” – the local name for the apricots – is used as the main ingredient from savoury to sweet treats and liquors.

Stein

Krems is located in the larger metropolitan area of Vienna, the centre of Austria and the World’s most liveable city. A range of connections are available from Krems to Vienna, which you can reach in 45 minutes to a one hours ride.
