The Flemming Hansen Award 2023 has been awarded to Professor Douglas West (King’s College, London). This long-term impact award honors a scholar who has made contributions to distinguished scholarship in advertising research. The EAA grants the Flemming Hansen Award every second year.
The Jury of the Flemming Hansen Award, made up of Jisu Huh (University of Minnesota), Peter Neijens (chair; University of Amsterdam), Charles R. Taylor (Villanova University), and Ralf Terlutter (University of Klagenfurt), was impressed by the outstanding scholarship presented by all nominees. After careful deliberations the jury unanimously decided on the winner taking into account the award criteria, including:
- outstanding contributions to distinguished scholarship in the field of advertising research,
- several publications that achieved significant impact in the field of advertising.
Professor West has made long-term contributions as a researcher, educator and in academic leadership roles. He has devoted his life to advertising research and theory development. His outstanding scholarly contributions have significantly advanced the advertising creative research field and theory building. He has published widely in top advertising journals and book chapters on this topic, exploring how creativity can enhance the effectiveness of advertising and improve consumer attitudes towards brands. Professor West’s research has examined various aspects of creativity in advertising, including how advertisers make creative decisions, manage creative risks, assess creativity in advertising outputs, and form creative identities. He has also investigated the relationship between creativity and brand personality, as well as the role of creative briefs and the creative process involved in developing effective advertising campaigns.
Furthermore, the jury noted that Professor West contributed significantly to the advertising discipline in an editorial capacity as Editor-in-Chief for two flagship journals in our discipline: the International Journal of Advertising (IJA) for five years (2003-2008) and the Journal of Advertising Research (JAR) for six years (2009-2014). He was instrumental in getting IJA included in the SSCI Index and then very much improved JAR in his time there. In these roles and other guest editorial roles since, Professor West has contributed significantly to shape the research agenda of the advertising discipline.
Dr. West was also very helpful to advertising scholars in general as well as European advertising scholars in particular. He has advised and mentored many graduate students across multiple institutions worldwide.
Taken together, Professor West has made outstanding and long-standing contributions to distinguished scholarship in advertising, making him a deserving winner of the 2023 Flemming Hansen Award.
