This was ICORIA 2025

ESHCC was honored to host the 23rd International Conference on Research in Advertising (ICORIA) from June 26 – 28, 2024. We welcomed more than 200 people from 34 different countries at campus Woudestein, Rotterdam.

Pre-conference: Where Good Papers Begin

The conference began with a morning dedicated to Where Good Papers Begin, eloquently organized by Colin Campbell, Jisu Huh and Charles R. Taylor. Fifty colleagues joined to learn about how to find interesting and research-worthy ideas (Colin Campbell, Anna Kim, Kacy Kim and Jameson Hayes), how then move to shape the research (Jooyoung Kim, Jisu Huh and Claire Segijn) and to ultimately ensure that their research ideas can shine (Tobias Langner, Charles R. Taylor and Tyler Millefeld).

Doctoral Colloquium: Young Leaders in Advertising

The doctoral colloquium drew 25 PhD student who engaged in interactive workshops and research-focused talks. Anastasios Panopoulos brought together an interesting program which varied from how to use AI (Jooyoung Kim), how to navigate your PhD (Sigal Segev) and how to chair a conference session (Cristina Boutsouki).

Main Conference

During two days 150 papers were presented in 39 sessions, covering a broad range of contemporary advertising and marketing topics, including special sessions from DgPUK and CUES. On Friday, we also had a very insightful and interactive Meet the Editors session with no less than seven Editors. We were happy to welcome Jisu Huh (Journal of Advertising), Charles Ray Taylor (International Journal of Advertising), Colin Campbell ( Journal of Advertising Research), Clair Segijn (Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising), Jooyoung Kim (Journal of Interactive Advertising), Peeter Verlegh (Journal of Interactive Marketing) and Martin Waiguny (Tourism & Hospitality Research).

Keynote Session

The conference keynote session had no less than two engaging keynote speakers. We kicked off the session with Jori van de Spijker, Global Head of Brand & Communication at DVJ Insights. Jori introduced us into some of the issues that keep brand managers up at night and showcased an excellent example of who practice and academia can work together to create impact.

Next, Lotte Willemsen, Professor with special appointment at University of Amsterdam and lector an Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, introduced us in the world of Purpose and how the practioner-academic gap might not be a bridge to cross, but just a different colored lens in the same glasses.

Panel Discussion

ICORIA 2025 also hosted the third EAA – AAA joint panel discussion. Four panelists, Patrick De Pelsmacker, Eric Haley, Vesna Zabkar and Tyler Millfeld discussed the conference theme: Advertising with a Purpose. The discussion was moderated by Tobias Langner (president of EAA) and Jameson Hayes (president of AAA).

Gala Dinner and Awards

The gala dinner was not only an excellent experience at Hal4 aan de Maas, there were also awards to be handed out. We started with the Best Student Paper Award, which was presented to Steffen Prior, Tobias Klinke, Nader Fadl and Tobias Langner for their paper: Digital participants in advertising research: Investigating the effects of information scope and human anchoring on AI-generated samples.

Next, we handed out the Best Paper Award to Steven Holiday, Yang Zhou, Jameson Hayes, Emily Dirks, Rebecca Ivic-Britt, Gulmira Amangalieva, Ananya Raka Chakrabortya, Samaneh Shirani Lapari, Caleb Porter, Joshua Jackson and Ademola Adelu for their paper: The impact of kidfluencer emotionality and parental advertising mediation on children’s attention, attitudes, and product desire for unboxing videos

ICORIA 2025 also had the special opportunity to hand out not one, but two Flemming Hansen Awards. The Flemming Hansen Award honors advertising scholars who made an outstanding contribution to distinguished scholarship in the field of advertising research. The award jury could not choose between two outstanding scholars and decided to hand out two this year. Congratulations to Edith Smit (University of Amsterdam) and Martin Eisend (University of Vienna)!

The conference ended with the general assembly meeting and a walking city tour in Rotterdam in which those who joined were able to experience Rotterdam like the locals do!

Many thanks to the student volunteers from Erasmus University Rotterdam, whose help during the three days made the conference run smoothly. Thank you to all attendees who made ICORIA 2025 the intellectually enriching, but also socially vibrant conference which it was. See you next year in Rotterdam!

EAA thanks the organizers Freya de Keyzer and Kyriakos Riskos for the wonderful edition of the conference!
